Nikon p1000

Nikon's new Coolpix P boasts an extraordinary zoom range and a suite of powerful stills and video features in a relatively compact body. We loved the original P for its sharp lens and effective stabilization, but its unimpressive EVF and lack of Raw capture mode made it less fun to use than it could have been.

The P addresses both issues and greatly expands the zoom range, which now caps out at mm equivalent. Take a look through this slideshow for a detailed overview of this powerful compact's key features. I bought the coolpix and took 2 night shot with it. When you turn it on I got the display showing in the view finder and when you opened the screen you see the display and that is it. It was like you left the lens cap on it.

I called nikon support and they walked me threw some items to do and yes they said there was a problem. I had to send it back. I just ordered another camera and when it comes in it better work. I had, and returned this camera. Here are my observations First off, I purchased it mainly to take 4k video of the moon. My intention was to use the the P on an equatorial mount and use the remote control accessory to operate it.

First fail - Nikon does not allow any video operation from the remote - stills only! Second fail, in my opinion, is the stabilzation.

It's just not good enough when compared to other sytems on the market. If you look at the many sample videos on Youtube, you will notice it immediately. I think Nikon needs to tweak this product and come out with an improved Mark II version. Then, I'll try it again. So sad!Jump to content. You currently have javascript disabled. Good morningWhy this drastic difference in quality? I have a Nikon PI took pics of the Cheetah with the factory settings and came out good ,later I might have customized some settings in the menu. So last week I took pics of this cardinal bird and all the pics were so poorwas VR off? Was it misfiring? I was leaning on a solid fence ,no wind ,very steady. The light conditions were better than the cheetah cloudy ,hand held without leaning on anything what settings could have been wrong?

Is the camera suddenly defective? Thanks for reading. Did you take more than one shot of the cardinal? If so, are all this out of focus? What are the basic EXIF data? I think you have camera shake in the bird image, when you take these images its best to have the camera on continuous and take a short burst, you will often find number 2 or 3 is sharper than the first one.

I put the image through shake reduction, ok not the answer but what i see is what makes me think thats the problem. Do you have a lens filter on? With a UV filter my P failed to properly focus at mm, especially in low light. I now shoot with no lens filter and the focus is fine although difficult in low light.

I have seen some reports of P filter focus problems online. Just stabilise your posture at SR.More telescope than camera, the Nikon Coolpix P takes this concept to the extreme, with a best-in-class, x optical zoom that lets you survey the craters of the moon. It also more than doubles the 50 to 60x zooms of competing cameras on the market. On the plus side, the P does shoot 4K video at 30 frames per second, and Nikon balances that large lens with a powerful optical stabilization system.

All told, the camera weighs more than three pounds, but weight may not be the only drawback of putting such a big lens on a compact camera. At the extreme telephoto end, is it even possible to shoot handheld and get sharp results?

This review was originally published on October 3, Once, it actually tipped our tripod forward. While superzooms are often thought of as perfect travel companions, the 3-plus-pound weight of the P is enough to make all-day hikers second-guess their decision to bring it along. The P, then, is big compared to other bridge-style zooms, but quite compact given the expansive zoom.

That long lens is best supported with a second hand, which is easy to do thanks to lens controls right on the barrel. Next to the primary zoom lever is the snap-back button, which briefly zooms out to help you locate your subject.

A control ring encircles the front of the lens barrel and can be set to control different options, like manual focus or exposure compensation. Also on top, the mode dial includes a bird and moon mode, two scene modes that the long lens obviously caters to.

The back of the camera is dominated by a 3. This GIF shows what mm looks like overlaid on a 24mm photo, and mm overlaid on the mm photo. Overall, the design of the P is a comfortable mix between DSLR and point-and-shoot — most of the functions we needed to access had a physical shortcut, which is great when you need to make adjustments quickly in the field.

The camera also includes both a pop-up flash and a hot shoe for using external flashes. The Photo submenu changes depending on exposure mode, with the most options presented in manual and more limited choices in automatic or the various scene modes. The Video menu houses such settings as framerate and wind noise reduction. Settings for the optical stabilization and autofocus modes are tucked into the Tools menu, which feels a bit nonsensical.

This could be an iOS improvement, since the a pop-up will now ask permission to connect to the network. You can connect to the camera via Bluetooth but the app will automatically switch to Wi-Fi for transferring photos. Wi-Fi is also required for remote control. Bluetooth can also be set up to automatically back up images to Nikon Image Space, though those images are saved at just 2 megapixels.

You can get closer than you can with any other camera on the market, and at the very least, that makes for an entertaining party trick. But, with patience, practice and a very steady hand, you may be able to capture unique pictures of wildlife — and even the craters on the moon. The Nikon P is a niche camera that will appeal to wildlife and landscape photographers who want to capture images of distant subjects and scenes.

While the camera is larger and heavier, you now get 4K video, RAW support and a slightly larger 3. You'll lose about shots of battery life versus and the ability to expand the ISO to 12, though. The P's, x, 24mm to 3,mm 35mm equivalent lens is an amazing feat of technology. With this wide focal range, the camera covers pretty much any situation you may encounter — from wide-angle terrestrial landscapes to the craters of the moon.

And, for macro shots, the lens can focus on objects as close as 0. At the same time, the lens' focal range brings a whole set of challenges to shooting, which I discuss later on in this review. Here, for example, are shots taken at 24mm and 3,mm; the latter image is of the slats of the white building in the middle of the frame. Two physical controls activate the zoom which only works when there's an SD card installed : a lever surrounding the shutter button and a lever on the left side of the camera body.

A "snap back" zoom button is positioned adjacent to the latter control and temporarily displays a wider angle with a framing-assist box so you can reacquire your subject if you lose sight of it in the viewfinder or on the LCD. Special Bird Watching and Moon functions are pretty basic, but their frame-assist features, which provide a border within which to frame the subject, can come in handy when you're photographing either subject.

Pressing the OK button zooms the lens to mm for bird photos and 1,mm for the moon. These are the default settings, which can also be adjusted. With a lens this long, image stabilization is critical. An estimated five stops of VR let me achieve a new, handheld goal of mm see the Barn shots above with pretty good results at 1,mm, too.

Others with steadier hands have been able to shoot the P at longer zoom ranges, but you'll want a tripod if you're zooming at anything greater than that. I'm a huge fan of full-articulated LCDs. Being able to open the LCD to the side and tilt it up and down makes it easier to shoot at different angles. The monitor can be folded facing the back of the camera to protect the screen from scratches when you're carrying it in a bag or backpack.

The P's screen measures 3. Unfortunately, it's not a touch screen. Nikon was one of the first companies to include interval shooting, which allows you to capture images at specific intervals and create your own time-lapse shots. If you'd rather not fuss with manually setting up a time-lapse shoot and then combining the images in a video in postproduction, the P has a handful of options you can use to shoot and automatically create a time-lapse video.

All you have to do is set the camera on a tripod, select the type of time lapse and press the shutter button.

Soon, without any fuss, you'll have a time-lapse video. Be sure to check for details in the user manual. This Star Trails time lapse isn't perfect, but it gives you an idea of what you can accomplish in this mode.

The quick-release plate on my tripod slipped, creating a vertical line at the top of some of the star trails.

Nikon P1000 REVIEW: INSANE 3000mm ZOOM, But…

Be sure your battery is freshly charged. I had a very short window several hours of clear skies, but the temperatures were below freezing and the notpercent-charged battery was drained before the entire time lapse was completed. Still, with very little effort, you can create some great star trails. These creative effects are fun to use and can add a unique look to images. The names of the effect groups Light, Depth, Memories, Classic and Noir aren't particularly descriptive, but previews are available when you select one of the options that's offered in each category.

I'm particularly fond of Noir black and white. In addition to several options within each group, settings such as contrast and exposure compensation can be adjusted individually, allowing you to create your own unique look.

Although not the most exciting feature of this camera, the effects lend a little bit of fun to an otherwise pretty serious camera. Footage is good, with accurate colors and exposure.By clicking the "Download" button on this page in order to start downloading the Manual, you indicate your acceptance of this Agreement and are agreeing to be bound by the terms of this Agreement.
