Mar 28, 1, Mid Wales. After doing some research on this kind of modification, I've decided to give it a go!
A couple of weeks ago I managed to buy a cheap 1kzte engine from a year manual colorado. Unwarranted from the buyer but nothing is impossible. Its got real good compression, still had toyota red coolant in it, been handled quite badly in the breaker's yard, the clutch is worn I hadnt got a pic when it arrived but had stripped out all the sensors and embarked on removing the "e" pump. Timing belt wise they're very easy to work on. Was a bit oily to use the camera when removing the injection pump pulley, but also an easy procedure.
I have removed the egr and blanked that off, when looking at the inlet manifold noticed the restriction that there is in there. Our 1kz mechanical pumps are built with a combination of original EFI pump parts and the best new performance parts available, with many years of development for optimum performance and have proven to be extra reliable when set up correctly.
Manuel pumps are ideal for when repowering 1kzte engines into any application and for use in the harsh environments when EFI stuff can fail. Please advise full details of your vehicle to ensure correct parts are supplied.

If there is not, there is a fault in the fuel system. Disconnect the fuel line to the carburettorslipping a plastic bag over the end of the line as you do so to catch any fuel inside. Secure the bag with a rubber bandthen turn the engine over with the starter. If fuel spurts out, there is a carburettor fault See Checking and cleaning an SU carburettor.
If no fuel, or only a dribble, emerges, either there is a blockage or leak somewhere in the fuel line See Checking fuel pipes or the fuel pump is not working. Some pumps are sealed and cannot be repaired; check to see if there are screws for dismantling.
A mechanical-pump drive hardly ever fails — though signs of wear may appear on the cam and operating leverlinkages and pins. Diaphragms can leak. A small leak may affect the engine noticeably only at high speeds, but may also let petrol drip through into the camshaft area and from there to the sump. If this occurs, there is a risk of an explosion. Valves have a disc and a seating held together by a small cage.
Pres- sure in one direction pushes the valve on to its seating, closing it; pressure the other way lifts the disc and opens the valve.
Valves last many years, but dirt can get in and stop them seating properly. For cleaning, see Overhauling a mechanical fuel pump.

Gaskets and loose fuel pipes may leak, and so may the seal between the diaphragm and the two halves of the pump body. Another occasional fault is loose mountings. The pump is often out of sight, and bolts may work loose unnoticed. This will cause a severe oil leak See Checking for oil leaks. Have a couple of tapered plugs or old pencils handy to block the fuel lines in case they gush petrol when you disconnect them. Sometimes the lines are held on with wire clips which have to be cut off with side cutters.
Replace them with new screw clips. Twisted wire can be used as a temporary measure. When refitting the pump, make sure the lever is above the camshaft. If not, the operating cam will be damaged as the engine turns over.
The 'official' way to test a pump is to put a pressure gauge on one side and a vacuum gauge on the other. A simpler way is shown here. Even if you find the fault, you may not be able to mend it.

If the pump is sealed, it will have to be replaced. But if there is an obstruction under the filter if any you may be able to get at it by removing the filter See Cleaning fuel-pump filters. The Video Course teaches you everything about modern cars. A mechanical fuel pump.

The pump is quite a simple swap over but what electonic problems will I have and links with the autobox ecu? Can I just unplug the ecu or will I have to keep it in with some of the sensors connected to keep other thing going?
Thanks in advance. So you will lose control of the auto. However there are aftermarket controllers for the auto A Or you can make a manual contoller and switch using diodes. Crude but it works. Persoanlly I would go for the aftermarket controller Update, I am now going to go manual pump As mine is auto i need to keep the lift cable to the auto and the TPS. I will run the factory ECU to control the auto. It will throw out error codes for the engine, but should not effect the auto operation If I get issues then will get an aftermarket auto controller I like my auto What about conversion on a manual boxed 1kz-te?
How would that work out. At this time, I really like my auto I give it heaps and heaps Smoother than a manual and from what I have seen lasts the distance. I like the ability to quietly walk over obstacles then if required nail it At the end of the day its personal choice I would leave the pump in there till it fails and then worry about it.Forums New posts Search forums. Moved the pump a bit more this week And wow like it has a power band Get it in the right spot and it pulls hard.Fuel injection pump performance is closely tied to engine performance. If your vehicle has a fuel delivery issue, it will literally starve to death.
Fuel injection problems, therefore, are one of the most pressing engine issues to deal with. The fuel is dispersed from the injection pump to the combustion chamber via a fairly simple process.
Pressurized fuel enters the fuel injector. When the fuel leaves the fuel injector, a spray tip distributes the fuel as a fine mist. Fast-forward to the present day, and those diesel fuel injector pumps are operating in the 30, to 40, psi range. Top-end engine performance is in many ways dictated by how much fuel can be processed by the engine. From these two things, a host of problems can surface.
A clean diesel fuel pump injector is a happy diesel fuel pump injector. Over time, residue can build up in the fuel system, and enough gunk, grime and grease can clog up the entire fuel injector pump.
If your engine has ever sputtered or hesitated during acceleration, a clogged fuel spray tip might be the glitch.
And it all starts with subpar diesel fuel. It all has to do with lubrication. With plenty of diesel fuel in the tank, the fuel pump bearings receive plenty of lubrication. With a near-empty tank, the fuel system is suddenly pushing air instead of diesel fuel.
Anything but diesel fuel can wear out the fuel pump bearings, which means the fuel injectors will not receive the fuel at the pressurized level 30, psi, 40, psi, etc.
They also deal with a tremendous amount of motion and other stresses. One small visitor inside a piece of dust, debris, etc. Worse yet, a microscopic object can leave the injector open all the time. This is a common diesel fuel injector pump glitch, and usually requires a complete injection pump rebuild or replacement. Previous template Next. I have a 1kz-te which I have wanted to put into my manual LN for a while now, after a lot of searching the internet and some useful advice from here I decided not to start the conversion as the general consensus was that the wiring will be a nightmare, I also learnt that it would be a lot easier if I had a 4 runner engine.
I have finally found a 4 runner with a cracked head that is being broken and I can get the engine and gearbox for a reasonable price. My question is - is it possible to turn a 1kz-te into a 1kz-t by taking all of the electrical bits off and replacing them with the bits from the runner engine.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Tags: None. You can leave all the sensors in place but disconnected. You might want to keep the ECU for glow plug control, but you could also just use a manual pushbutton.
I don't understand why a 4Runner is easier for the conversion than a surf? Do you mean the 4Runner is the 1KZ-T donor? Comment Post Cancel. You'll have to relocate the engine mounts on the chassis. Sorry if I was not clear enough in the first post. Yes the 4 runner is the donor vehicle, I have a Surf.
I don't have the ecu for the 1kz-te, as I would like to keep mine as a manual truck I understand that I would need an ecu from a manual Surf, this will not be easy to find. I have not yet bought the runner engine, but from what you are saying I might only need to buy the pump and the throttle linkage to get the engine running without an ecu?
Would there be anything else I would need? Thanks for the info Nifty Nev! Are the mounts on the chassis the same but just in the wrong position or will I need to cut the mounts off the runner? If it is just the pump and linkage i might just get the whole inlet manifold, pump, flywheel and gear box. Last edited by mattisaLN ; 4th August In my case 85 Hilux pickupI just cut off my original mounts and moved them back the required inches. If you wanted to run it as a 1kz-te with a manual tranny, you could use either an auto or a manual ECU, that doesn't matter. You should also get the spacer between the inlet manifold and crossover pipe from the 1kz-t, on the 1kz-te this spacer has the butterfly valve which you won't need.
Definitely get the flywheel and bellhousing, but the gearbox should be the same as is on your LN, an R or It's possible the shifters are in a different location, though. You should also get the front and rear driveshafts, as those are a different length. Also the transmission crossmember and the adapter plate that allows the transmission to sit back further.
You probably know all this already but there it is anyway. That's all I can think of at the moment.
